Join us for a panel discussion on climate change and a new way forward for humanitarian medical response moderated by Dr. Sheri Weiser, founding co-director of the University of California’s Center on Climate Change, Health and Equity.
Climate change impacts populations already vulnerable to humanitarian crises. In Sub-Saharan Africa, communities emit few greenhouse gases yet experience daily consequences of global environmental crises. Climate change contributes to rising vulnerabilities, changes in malnutrition and infectious disease burden, poor crops, population displacement, and social unrest.
Medical organizations serving these communities treat the health effects of climate change. Yet, more research is needed to better understand the impacts of climate change and to provide medical care in an environmentally sustainable way.
In the panel, experts will discuss climate change’s impact on communities in crisis areas, and innovative strategies to reduce the environmental impact of medical humanitarian care. Panelists will speak from the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, the humanitarian medical non-profit ALIMA, and climate change non-profit the Climate Action Accelerator.
