The HKS Women's Network and the Harvard W3D will be inviting Ms. Mariko Bando, the Chancellor of Showa Women's University, and a writer who has written many books including “Josei-no-Hinkaku (The Dignity of Women)." Based on her experience of gender equality policy at the Prime Minister's Office and the Cabinet Office, she will be sharing her perspectives on the changes surrounding women in modern Japanese society, her experience in studying at Harvard and serving as the Consul General in Brisbane, Australia, and her ideas of future women's education.
Speaker bio:
Mariko Bando is the Chancellor of Showa Women's University. Ms. Bando was born in Toyama Prefecture in 1946. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, she joined the Prime Minister's Office. In 1995, she served as Vice Governor of Saitama Prefecture. In 1998, she served as Consul General in Brisbane, Australia. After serving as the first Director-General of the Gender Equality Bureau of the Cabinet Office in 2001, Ms. Bando retired from government service in 2003. In 2004, she was appointed as a professor at Showa Women's University and the director of the Institute for Women's Culture at the university. Since 2007, Ms. Bando had served as the President of the Showa Women's University, then since 2014, she has served as the Chancellor of the Showa Women's University. Her books include her debut work "Women are trying", the best-selling book "The Dignity of Women," which has sold over 3 million copies, "70-year-old Accomplishments" and "How to Make a Happy Life".
