Op Ed Project: Reclaiming Narratives of Power and Justice

Please join the OpEd Project on Wednesday, December 8th, at 7 pm ET for an Expert Conversation on “Reclaiming Narratives of Power and Justice" with Yukari Iwatani Kane and Jesse Vasquez.

Until 2019, Jesse Vasquez was editor-in-chief of the San Quentin News, the only completely prisoner-managed newspaper in the nation, where he worked to tell the stories of inmates convicted of terrible crimes, from the inside. Yukari Kane, an OpEd Project mentor-editor, founded The Prison Journalism Project to do the same, from the outside. Join Jesse and Yukari as they explore how to invert the hierarchies of perceived expertise in the pursuit of radical change - both personal and institutional.

We know that many of you possess powerful expertise that the world underestimates. How can we reframe our perceived weaknesses as our strengths? How can we leverage our experiences, and those of our communities, to challenge the systems that disenfranchise us? This is an exciting opportunity to learn from two inspirational leaders who have reclaimed the narratives told about them and built collective power as a result.

This 60-minute virtual live event + Q&A is part of The OpEd Project’s 2021 series of Expert Talks exploring aspects of voice, identity, and how ideas come to change the world. There is a nominal fee, and scholarships available for those in need.

When: December 8, 7pm ET
RSVP: Register HERE.
